A recent Gallup Poll of church attendance found here revealed 35% of Nebraskans attend a weekly religious service, 24% infrequently, and 40% do not attend a religious service at all. The survey was focused on what we would consider a large group church gathering. This Barna study revealed that of those who are active in their faith, young people and those who are not married are a significant minority. Therefore, the trend of decreasing church attendance is expected to continue in the future.
So Why Do We Care?
We care because we have found Church to be one of the most important aspects of people’s lives. Candlewood Church is made up of people of all ages, but we tend to be on the younger side. There have been many people over the last 20-30 years at Candlewood who have experienced a life change they thought was impossible. They found new life in Christ. As a part of the Church, they have experienced authenticity in relationships. They found real people who were not afraid to talk about failures in their life. They saw people facing struggles from addictions and depression to anxiety and abuse. They saw a group of people passionate about each other and living for Christ. They didn’t see a perfect church or a church filled with people attempting to be perfect, but they saw imperfect people who were being changed by Christ. In short, they saw a Church.
In no way do we claim Candlewood is the best church out there, but we certainly have experienced some of the incredible blessings God provides for those who are actively a part of the Church. We are excited to be starting a four part series during the month of June in Lincoln titled “Why Church?”
We will be looking at some of the following questions:
- Why be involved with a church regularly?
- Why does it matter?
- What are some of the secrets to happiness in life?
- What is the purpose of life?
- Why spend time together with other Christians in a church?
- Why love others?
- Why give thanks to God?
- Why give glory to God?
No matter what your background, you are welcome to join us on Sundays in Lincoln at 10am at 2640 R Street to hear and see what this is all about as we look at “Why Church?”
